What are the Optional Extras?

All Optional extras are listed during the booking process. Add them in or take them out as you make up a quote for yourself before you book. Everything that has an extra fee will be listed in the quote before you book. Even if there are extra charges to pay locally you will see them in your quote.

  • Insurance Cover - basic cover is always included but check the insurance excess (deductible) that you will be liable for in the event you have to make a claim for damage to the vehicle or to a third party. If you need us to explain it in detail give us a call and we will make sure you know exactly the terms and conditions of your rental.
  • Windscreen and tyre cover - often included in the daily rate but is sometimes offered as an extra.
  • Crossing borders or visiting another country will incur an additional insurance fee. Typically Mexico or travel through Europe from the UK or if you plan to visit Africa then there are border crossing fees to consider.
  • Mileage - where unlimited mileage is not included in the daily rate you can pre-purchase mileage or opt for limited mileage. Use google maps to work out the minimum you need. Unlimited mileage is not always the cheapest way to buy mileage. You may only get the benefit of unlimited mileage if you plan to drive long distances over on a long-term rental.
  • Young driver fee may be charged for drivers 21 to 24 years old.
  • Under-body damage cover is sometimes offered in regions where you may be driving on metal or unsealed roads.
  • One-way rentals and relocation fees. These are often charges made when you collect from one depot and return it to another. Sometimes it is a flat fee and others work on a charge per kilometer. Sometimes these fees are waived for long term rentals over 21 days. Other times there may be a special offer or discount offered because the company needs campervans to be relocated.

Other Costs to consider when renting a campervan:

There are other options to consider when working out the cost of renting a campervan too:

  • Transfers from the airport or hotel are rarely included. Getting to the depot usually means paying for a train, bus or taxi. Some firms offer free transfers especially in New Zealand. Others such as Cruise America offer timed transfers so you have to be at a certain pick up point at a specified time and their bus will collect you.
  • Parking at the depot. If you drive to the depot and leave your car you may incur a parking charge. Some offer this for free.
  • Pets can go free but there is normally an extra cleaning fee. Make sure you can secure your pet either in a cage or by a pet safety belt while travelling.
  • Snow chains for those intrepid skiiers or mountain climbers.

If you are budgeting for a campervan road trip then include the cost of fuel, tolls, ferry crossings and campsites. You can free camp in many countries or stay free on private property. We have included suggestions and links on our trip planner pages for each country.

How to save money on a campervan holiday

We find that the cost of renting a campervan or motorhome is cheaper than renting a car and staying in hotels or motels and that's because you won't be paying for breakfasts, morning coffee, lunches, afternoon teas, dinners etc as you can self cater and eat where and when you choose.
