Driving in Winter in Iceland

Only about 5,000 km (3,100 miles) of Iceland’s 13,000 km of roads are serviced during winter.

Many roads are blocked by snow. If you do head out in winter, be sure to factor in driving at a reduced speed because of icy roads and don’t forget the days are short at this time of year.

Highland and mountain roads are only open during the summer and early autumn. Many roads in Iceland are raised on embankments to prevent winter snow from burying them, roll-over accidents often occur when drivers lose control of their vehicles and drive off the road.

Winter tyres, a scraper and brush and windshield washer fluid are a must and, even if you’re on a day trip and intend on staying in the heated car, warm clothes and some basic food supplies are necessary in the event that you get stranded.

Take a torch and a snow shovel.

Wear sunglasses.

Driving safely in Iceland

You need to be aware that road conditions in Iceland change very quickly. Check the weather before you set off and be prepared. Keep blankets handy and know what to do if the weather turns bad. If there are high winds, point the campervan into the wind. If there is heavy rain pull off the road and wait for it to pass. Make sure you are in a safe parking area and that others can see you. Always keep your headlights on.

Speeding

Speeding is not often considered when driving a campervan as you are usually travelling at a leisurely pace but make sure that you take it very steady as there are many gravel roads. Take corners at a slower pace than you would in a car. The speed limit outside of towns is 90km/h (55mph) You must wear a seatbelt.

Watch out for wandering animals. Make sure you stop before taking photographs!

It is easy to get over-tired when there is no night. 24-hour sunlight tempts you to stay awake for longer.

Take a map.

Don't rely on GPS to find your way. Take a real map and make sure you know which direction you are heading. Try not to pack in too much each day.
