There is a wide range of campervans and motorhomes for rent in Spain. However, unlike car hire, there is not the same selection of vehicles from every depot.
In Barcelona for example, there is a range of sleeper cars. This one sleeps 4 people but is not available in Madrid but is available from Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao, Santander, Malaga, Alicante, Seville. This is a cheap option for 2 to 4 people.
Barcelona has many other choices of campervans and motorhomes too.
The smaller, older vehicles are cheaper than newer and/or larger motorhomes. But, balance that with how many people are travelling together. Renting a 6 berth and sharing the cost between 6 people may work out cheaper than getting three 2 berth campers. Our handy booking engine will let you compare prices.
Book early. This is so important for three reasons:
Firstly, there is a limited supply of campervans and motorhomes in Spain. They are not as plentiful as cars and they get booked up early especially in the high season which is July and August. There is such a demand that some companies will limit hires to a 14 day minimum hire and only from Madrid to Madrid.
Secondly, if you know the layout of the campervan or motorhome then booking early will ensure that you get this vehicle. All of the day and night-time layouts are illustrated on our website. So, if you need bunk beds, or a fixed double bed or you want a motorhome with shower and toilet, then book it now!
Thirdly, many campervan companies in Spain structure their rates using the “flex” system which means that daily hire rates change depending on availability. So, the few vehicles available then the more expensive the rates.
You have to make a few decisions before renting a motorhome or campervan in Spain:
- How many people will be sleeping in the campervan?
- The bed layout?
If there are six of you then the 6-berth campervans or motorhomes are your only option. You will need 6 seat belts – one for each passenger. You won’t be able to leave the depot if there are more people than seatbelts in the vehicle that you have booked.
How closely do you want to sleep to each other? If there are kids in the party then they can top and tail in a double bed or choose a camper with bunk beds. There is a variety of sizes. The kids like to sleep in the double cab above the cab as it is a ladder climb to get up to it.
This diagram shows the bed layout in this 6-berth campervan available in Spain. You can also see that there is a kitchen and a shower with toilet and basin. A full list of the on-board facilities is available for all vehicles listed on our website.
The night time layout is important to get right for a happy and enjoyable motorhome holiday!
Couples often rent a 4 berth with a fixed bed. This gives you more room and the bed doesn’t have to be made up daily.
The full range of vehicles is listed depending on where you choose to collect your campervan or motorhome from. Just be aware that the range varies from depot to depot.

Every company in Spain that rents out motorhomes does have a cancellation policy:
This is an example only and may not apply to every company:
The initial deposit paid is non-refundable. In addition to forfeiting your deposit, the following charges also apply:
– From day of booking confirmation up to 33 days before the commencement of the hiring: 50% rental cost.
– If it is notified between 32 and 19 days before the commencement of the hiring: 80% rental cost.
– If it is notified within 18 days before the commencement of the hiring: 100% rental cost.”
There are many reasons that customers have to cancel and we try and refund wherever possible. However, we incur costs ourselves and try to minimise the costs that our customers have to pay. Please check your travel insurance if you have to cancel after you have booked.
Customers book through us because we have been booking campervans and motorhome rentals since 1998 and they know that their vehicle will be ready and waiting for them when they arrive. This is true if the campervan is booked in Spain or as far away as New Zealand or Australia. However, in the rare case that a vehicle has been damaged by a previous customer and the vehicle that has been pre-booked is not available then the usual practice is to offer and upgrade wherever possible.
We operate with companies that have good quality campervans and motorhomes but also have enough vehicles on their fleet so that in the event of damage or breakdown – yes, it sometimes does happen! – they have back up vehicles. Some smaller companies ask why we won’t include them on our booking engine and this is one of the main reasons even if they pass our strict quality requirements.
All vehicles are insured. The level of liability does change depending on the company that provides the rental vehicle. Check the insurance excess as this is the customer’s liability. This has to be covered by a credit card. Details here:
Motorhomes mentioned in this contract are insured according to law , with a €600.00 excess deposit. If there are any accidents during the term of the rental contract, the customer would assume that amount.
In order to guarantee good use and correct return of the vehicle, a Security Deposit of €600.00 by credit card is required before departure, ( accepted credit cards are -Visa , Diners or American Express).
The security deposit will be refunded after checking the vehicle by the technical service, who will decide with a detailed note, if there is any damage caused by the wrong use,the amount that customer will have to pay. In that case, the customer will approve to use the deposit. If the valuation of damages could not be made immediately, the lessee would have 30 days to refund the remaining deposit, once it had been deduced the reparation cost for the caused damages. If the bill is not over, and consequently ,the payment for using of the rented motorhome, penalties and other concepts, the customer will accept that, that amount will be paid with the credit card used for the renting.”
Each customer is advised to take out their own travel insurance and this covers medical emergencies and belongings cover. The campervan hire company’s insurance covers the vehicle only.
Please check as some credit card companies offer travel insurance as part of their package. Sometimes travel insurance included vehicle excess cover on rental vehicles too. It is worth checking so that you don’t pay twice.
Minimum rent is usually around 3 days outside of high season. High season can be up to 14 days minimum in some areas. This only occurs during high season (July and August) or over Easter.
Pick up and return times are often set at time of booking. This is to allow a good amount of time after the vehicle has been returned by a previous customer to be cleaned and checked. This ensures that when a new renter collects the camper or motorhome it is fully stocked and the extras that have been ordered are in place. The vehicles also have regular mechanical checks too.
This is one of the main differences between car hire and camper hire is that cars take a lot shorter time to clean and prepare.
Touring Spain is a fantastic experience and some customer maximise this by collecting in one depot and returning it to another. There are extra costs involved with this and these are shown at the time of booking. One-way rentals are at the discretion of the fleet manager who has to ensure that at busy times the vehicle is in the right depot for the next hirer.
One way hires also mean that a minimum hire is applied which is often 10 to 14 days.
In Europe a renter can pick up a campervan in Spain and return it to another European country. This is possible and we can advise and help you make this rental.
All renters need a credit card in their own name.
Drivers must be 25 years old or older. In some cases with sleeper cars drivers as young as 21 can rent a camper.
All drivers must have a valid driving licence. If it is a European licence then that is sufficient. If the renter is from outside of Europe then an international driving licence is required.
Some companies allow pets with an additional cleaning charge.
Customers are advised on collection of areas they are not allowed to travel to. These include Morocco, Bosnia and Russia.
There is a rental contract to read and sign on collection of all vehicles. Please ask at the depot if you are not sure of any of the conditions.
Spain is one of our most popular destinations to travel around by Campervan or Motorhome. Take your time and you will return year after year. There is so much to see and do for all the family. It is well set up and there are plenty of campsites and free areas to park up for the night.
You will meet many other campers who will be renting for the first time or are old hands. Good advice is shared around bbq’s and camp fires.
