How to Get the Best Price on Campervan Hire

Campervans.com has booked thousands of campervan hires for thousands of customers worldwide since we started in 1998. We are a trusted member of the online campervan rental community.

  • The prices change depending on the time of year. So peak season in the northern hemisphere is during the summer months of July and August, but the peak season in Australia and New Zealand can run from November to March.

  • Rental rates are generally higher when there are school holidays, national holidays and specific events or festivals.

  • The daily rate increases the nearer you get to the start of your planned holiday. Book early to avoid these increases. Rates are usually released at least 11 months ahead. This is similar to the way airlines price their tickets too.

  • Larger campervans and motorhomes are the ones that sell out the quickest during family holiday times.

  • Smaller campervans are cheaper than larger ones. Older campervans are cheaper than newer ones.

  • Long-term rentals, usually over 21 days, offer a cheaper daily rate. So add a few days on when you are creating a quote to see if the price goes down the longer you book for. You may find you get some extra days free if you book for a few days more.

There is limited availability for campervans and motorhomes. Car rental firms have many more vehicles to rent out than campervan companies, so book early to get the size of camper that you want.

What’s Included in Your Motorhome Rental?

Every booking includes the essentials you need to hit the road with confidence. What’s included can vary slightly by country and rental partner, but you’ll always see full details before you book.

Typically included in the rental price:

  • Campervan or motorhome hire

  • Basic insurance (with excess)

  • Taxes and standard rental fees

Often included, depending on location:

  • Bedding and linen

  • Cooking equipment and crockery

  • 24/7 roadside assistance

Any optional extras, such as excess reduction, camping equipment, GPS, or child seats, are clearly shown during the booking process, so you can tailor your trip to suit your plans and budget.

Explore the optional extras

All optional extras are listed during the booking process. Add them in or take them out as you make up a quote for yourself before you book. Everything that has an extra fee will be listed in the quote before you book. Even if there are extra charges to pay locally you will see them in your quote.

  • Insurance Cover - basic cover is always included, but check the insurance excess (deductible) that you will be liable for in the event you have to make a claim for damage to the vehicle or to a third party. If you need us to explain it in detail, give us a call, and we will make sure you know exactly the terms and conditions of your rental.

  • Windscreen and tyre cover – often included in the daily rate but is sometimes offered as an extra.

  • Crossing borders or visiting another country will incur an additional insurance fee. Typically Mexico or travel through Europe from the UK or if you plan to visit Africa, then there are border crossing fees to consider.

  • Mileage – where unlimited mileage is not included in the daily rate, you can pre-purchase mileage or opt for limited mileage. Use google maps to work out the minimum you need. Unlimited mileage is not always the cheapest way to buy mileage. You may only get the benefit of unlimited mileage if you plan to drive long distances on a long-term rental.

  • Young driver fee may be charged for drivers 21 to 24 years old.

  • Underbody damage cover is sometimes offered in regions where you may be driving on metal or unsealed roads.

  • One-way rentals and relocation fees. These are often charges made when you collect from one depot and return it to another. Sometimes it is a flat fee, and others work on a charge per kilometer. Sometimes these fees are waived for long-term rentals over 21 days. Other times there may be a special offer or discount offered because the company needs campervans to be relocated.

Information on Your Campervan Rentals

What happens if my campervan is not available for the dates I have booked?

  • If the campervan or motorhome is not available no payment is taken. We then contact all the other campervan rental suppliers that have similar vehicles in their fleet.

  • If other campers are available for the same dates and a similar size of vehicle and for a similar cost, we forward these options to you by email.

  • You then review this list of options.

  • If you don't like any of these alternatives, we don't book it, and no payment is processed.

  • If you do choose an alternative campervan or motorhome from this email and you confirm that you want to book it, then we process the payment and confirm the booking, and you are all set to go.

We contact all of these rental suppliers every day.

We have a great system that kicks in as soon as we know that your first choice is not available. We talk to the people we know to help you get the best deal and a great camper.

This is an example of what we send out to you if a campervan or motorhome is not available.

You can see that there are still options that you can choose from, so no need to panic!

How to get your first choice of luxury campervans and motorhomes to rent

  • Avoid the peak times. Avoid school holidays and public holidays.

  • There are other times when campervans and motorhomes are in high demand. If there is a popular rock festival such as the Glastonbury Festival in the UK or Burning Man in the USA the motorhomes and campervans are at a premium.

  • Maximise your time and look at collecting a camper in one location and returning it to another. This is very popular in New Zealand, Australia, the USA and Canada. It is a bit more challenging in Europe but not impossible.

  • If you are an experienced campervan or motorhome renter, then you probably know what you want. We can guarantee you will find enough choice to satisfy your needs. Let us know if you can't find what you want. Sometimes there is a different range of vehicles at a different depot. You may only have to change where you want to collect the camper from to get exactly what you want.

  • Try to be flexible over your dates of collection and return. We may be able to offer more options. Avoid Sundays when picking up or returning your campervan rental.

FAQs on Motorhome & Campervan Rentals

How much would it cost to hire a campervan for a week?

The rental cost for a campervan is divided up into the following:

  1. Daily rental rate. This covers the cost of the rental and includes basic insurance with an insurance excess.

  2. In Australasia, the rental rate usually includes unlimited mileage, bedding, kitchen contents, etc.

  3. In the USA and Canada, mileage is an additional cost. Bedding and kitchen kits are also extra.

  4. In Europe, rental rates will usually include unlimited mileage but some rental companies do impose a limit on mileage for the duration of the hire and this is expressed as a daily limit.  Bedding, etc., is an optional extra.

  5. Size of vehicle. Smaller campervans are cheaper.

  6. Age of vehicle. Older vehicles are cheaper.

  7. Time of booking.  If you book 12 weeks ahead, your rental will be cheaper than leaving it to the last minute.

  8. Season. Winter bookings are cheaper than the height of the season, summer holidays, and school holidays.

  9. Festivals such as Burning Man and Glastonbury are popular rental times, so book well ahead if your holiday clashes with these dates.

  10. One-way rentals incur a relocation charge. Round trips are cheaper.

  11. Additional insurance to reduce the insurance excess is an additional charge.

The best vehicle is one that suits you. If you are travelling with a young family then choose a camper with an onboard shower and toilet.  If you are travelling with teenagers, choose a larger motorhome with bunk beds.  If you are on a strict budget, choose a small sleeper car or truck camper. The full range of vehicles is on display on our booking engine. Use the filters to narrow down the choices.

Travelling in excessively hot weather is not the best for a road trip. Choose Spring or Autumn for cooler temperatures and cheaper rates. Many campervans and motorhomes have air conditioning and built-in heating for those colder nights.

A campervan rental is cheaper when you book as far ahead as possible, This is the best time to book.  Older, smaller vehicles are cheaper.

Rent when there isn’t high demand, so not during summer or school holidays, national holidays, or peak season.  This can be during the winter in many countries, but our campers are popular with skiers.

If you plan to have a campervan holiday that is less than 3 months in duration then renting is cheaper.  It makes sense to purchase a camper if your holiday is longer than 3 months.

Make sure there are enough beds. Also, the type of beds.  Many rentals are made up of double beds. So, if no one likes sharing, then go for a rental with singles and bunk beds or enough double beds so there is one each.

1. Choose your location
Select your country, then choose where you’d like to pick up and return your campervan. One-way rentals are popular across Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, helping you make the most of your time. A relocation fee may apply and is shown during booking.

Enter your dates to see which campervans are available instantly or available on request. Booking early gives you the best chance of securing your first choice.

3. If a camper is on request
If your chosen campervan is listed as on request, we’ll try to secure it for you. If it’s unavailable, we’ll offer a similar camper at the same price or cheaper whenever possible. You’re always free to accept or decline any alternative offered.

4. Confirm and pay
Once you book, payment is processed. This may be a deposit or full payment depending on the rental partner. Any additional charges payable at pickup are clearly explained before you confirm.

5. Support when you need it
Our reservation team is available to answer questions before you book and to help with anything after your booking is confirmed.

Every campervan or motorhome hire includes the core essentials you need to get on the road. What’s included can vary slightly by country and rental partner, but full details are always shown before you book.

Included as standard:

  • Campervan or motorhome hire

  • Basic insurance (with an excess)

  • Taxes and standard rental fees

Often included, depending on location:

  • Bedding and linen

  • Cooking equipment and crockery

  • 24/7 roadside assistance

Optional extras such as excess reduction, camping equipment, GPS, and child seats are clearly listed during booking, so you can customise your hire with no hidden costs.

You will have to arrive at the depot to collect the campervan or motorhome to complete the pickup process that includes presenting your driving licence and signing rental agreements.

  1. Driving an RV is very similar to driving a van. Using side mirrors and rearview cameras is key to successfully manoeuvring the campervan. Driving the campervan is very similar to driving a car. Be aware of the height or your vehicle, especially if you have beds above the cab.

Remember this:

Size & Dimensions

  • Height: Motorhomes are 2.8-3.5m tall (vs cars ~1.5m). Watch for low bridges, drive-throughs, car park height barriers, tree branches and high hedges.

  • Length: 5-7m for most campervans (vs cars 4-5m). Wider turning circles, harder to park, need more space to manoeuvre.

  • Width: 2-2.5m (vs cars 1.8m). Need to be more careful on narrow roads, passing oncoming traffic

Driving:

  • Slower acceleration: Heavier vehicles take longer to reach speed

  • Longer braking distance: Much heavier so you need more space to stop safely

  • Wind sensitivity: Tall, boxy shape catches wind. So can feel unstable in strong crosswinds or when trucks pass

  • Reduced visibility: Larger blind spots, harder to see directly behind (reversing cameras help)

  • Top speed: Usually governed to 100-110 km/h maximum

Differences

  • Parking: Need longer spaces, can't fit in regular car parks, must use designated campervan/caravan bays.

  • Fuel consumption: 12-18 L/100km (vs cars 6-10 L/100km). Higher fuel costs

  • Toll roads: Sometimes charged as "heavy vehicle"

  • Reversing: Ask another passenger to watch you reverse. Look out for overhanging trees and bollards.

  • Roundabouts: Need to swing wide; can't take tight lines like a car

Things Moving Inside

  • Weight shifts: Items in cupboards, water tanks, and passengers moving around all affect handling.

  • Speed bumps: Must slow right down or risk items flying around inside

  • Corners: Everything shifts - need to secure loose items or they'll end up on the floor

Important

Drive like you're carrying a house full of dishes – smooth acceleration, gentle braking, slow cornering. Avoid sudden movements.

Most people adapt within 2-3 hours of driving. The biggest adjustment is remembering the height (low bridges/branches are the number one cause of damage) and taking much more space for all maneuvers.

You’ll have full contact with both us and the local rental company throughout your booking and hire. If you need support before you travel or while you’re on the road, help is always available.

Breakdown cover is usually included in the daily rental rate, so in most cases there’s no need to add this separately. Only a small number of rental partners offer breakdown cover as an optional extra, and this will be clearly shown during the booking process if it applies.
